Red

Red is Comprised of a vintage African Mud cloth, washed Linen, cotton embroidery thread, Burgundy-dyed Kantha, Moroccan coin (that I had brought back from Morocco in the 80’s), and little Bhutan coins for her earrings.

She came with her own socks just no head or arms.

Her little Mary Jane style shoes are made from an Indian Kantha fabric.  Arms and neck pieces and hair from a blue & Pink African mud cloth.  Around her neck in a baby blue knotted chain stitch cord, hangs the Vintage Moroccan coin.

She is a natural redhead as you can tell by her natural matching heart-shaped muff [slang since the 1690s for vagina area] that occurred to me on Valentine’s Day as I was stitching away figuring out what direction to take next.

I have thoughts and images as I work through the piece …Red in the 1890s, another lifetime ago, danced the Cancan in the original French Bohemian Paris nightlife, the feminists then were called the unruly girls and the artists… yes, she knew Toulouse- Lautrec.
